Ah good. That is a combination which I would expect to work at least to
a basic degree.

Most issues in areas like processor type are handled by the kernel, and
that would be dealt with by updating to at least 10.4.8. The memory and
I/O controllers probably fall into the same realm.

The RAID card is one that might have had a separate driver. If you were
using software RAID, that is a standard feature of Mac OS X which is
sup****ted on all models (e.g. using two external drives on an iMac).

The question is what other files specific to the Mac Pro were included
on its original DVD, which were missing from the iMac DVD. For example,
there could be 64-bit versions of some software which the iMac doesn't
have. As I mentioned before, drivers for new hardware components in the
Mac Pro could also be an issue.

The main worry would be features like the System Management Controller -
if the iMac's system didn't manage the fans correctly in the Mac Pro,
you could have a serious problem!

These would only be added by a later combo update if Apple had modified
those files since the release of the Mac Pro DVD, or if sup****t for
multiple models was incor****ated into the same kernel extension.

Alternatively, if Apple were privately treating all Intel Macs as having
a unified Tiger system, then later combo updates would include
everything missing from the DVD for older models which were included
with later models.

I'd need to do a comparison between the DVDs and have a look at the
combo updates to get a clearer picture. I have easy access to several
mid-2007 Mac models (came with 10.4.9 or 10.4.10) and occasional access
to a few earlier Intel models, but can't think of anyone I see regularly
who has the original Mac Pro.

If you consider the MacBook Pro vs iMac, in many cases the contem****ary
models are almost identical apart from the form factor, with the MacBook
Pro having a few more features (e.g. trackpad, keyboard, battery, screen
close detector, ExpressCard). Some models have variations in the video
chipset.

The MacBook has integrated graphics, so it might omit drivers for other
video cards, but I think Apple's general policy is to include
everything, so that the system can be used to boot another computer (in
case of emergencies, if nothing else).

That's good news.

I'm thinking particularly of smaller scale things like Air****t and
Bluetooth, which might be different components in the Mac Pro and use
different drivers.

I expect this sort of driver would have been updated between 10.4.7 and
10.4.11, so the latest combo updates are likely to include everything
im****tant.
