I've got both a 2.4GHz 20" iMac and a stock 2.8GHz 8-core MacPro. Both
are fine machines. The MacPro is noisier, as is to be expected. It's
still pretty damn quiet though - the iMac is virtually silent.

Depending on the software, the iMac really isn't that much slower than
the MacPro. If the software is multi-core enabled then yes, the MacPro
trounces it, but for most stuff they're remarkably similar.
