Thanks for the replies.

I did have my doubts about LaCie when purchasing the drive, but having
the three year warranty was reassuring and I never imagined the sup****t
would be this bad, especially now as they are selling rack based
ethernet storage presumably geared towards the business market. I wonder
how they get away with providing this level of 'service'!

Seeing as I don't know when the problem will be resolved, it would be
prudent to order another terabyte SATA disk, and when LaCie get their
act together, the replacement can be used as a spare.
