get the filetype with 'mdim****t -n -d1 <filename>
Then in the file /System/Library/Spotlight/RichText.mdim****ter ->
Contents/Info.plist add the type to the LSItemContentTypes array (you
will see entries like public.text, public.xml, public.rtf)
