App/utility to store notes - AppleScript prob?

by Justin C <justin.0805@[EMAIL PROTECTED] > May 16, 2008 at 10:39 AM

I've just migrated my boss to OS X. I managed to get an iMac at home for
him a few months ago so that when the transition was made at work it
wouldn't be so hard.

Back under Windows, from the days of Win3.1, he's used, initially, MS
Cardfile to store addresses and notes agains those addresses. When
Cardfile disappeared in Win95 this data was migrated to a program called
Jot (3rd party software, with Cardfile im****t facitlity). Now that we
don't have an OS on which to run Jot, he's lost some features, and he
misses them.

I spent a large number of exceedingly boring hours extracting hundreds
of cardfile entries, tidying them up, and im****ting them into
AddressBook.

What he wants to do is print the notes section from the card he has
selected. Under the old system it was just a case of Ctrl+P, under OS X
I can find no way other than to select the text, copy it, paste it into
another application, and then print it.

My ideas to get around the problem are:

1 Get him to use Address Book as just an address book, and store
notes in another application (simple index card type system -
preferably free) or maybe URL or some other kind of link in
Address Book to link to the data else where - I can set up
something on our in-house website without too much effort, I'm
        sure.

2 Write an AppleScript to grab the Notes section from the current
Address Book entry and either print it or paste it into TextEdit
and then print it, discarding it afterwards. This second option
maybe the hardest for me, I'm no AppleScript guru - in fact, I
barely know it, but I can have a go.

What I need to know, is: is number 2 possible? I find AppleScript quite
tough going, and I don't want to bang my head against a problem for a
few days only to find it's not possible. If I know from the outset that
it *is* possible, then I'll know I'm not wasting my time.

The whole problem has arisen because of non-standard uses of some
software, it's now come up and bitten us.

Any suggestions regarding the above, or comments on other ways of
achieving a similar end will be gratefully received.

	Justin.
