Ye gods - well, could be. I'll give it a go when I next want to
re-start. I hadn't installed the Epson EasyPrint module (whatever the
hell that is) - there was me, innocently thinking that the driver was
all one needed to print - and I thought that 'cos it's what the Epson
do***entation told me. No mention of what the other items of software
Epson supplies for the printer are for in the docs I've got as far as
I've been able to tell so far anyway.
(the advice above is bang on right about repair permissions if nothing
else - oh boy does that job need doing)

Hmm.
USB seems okay. It's just the Firewire connection that's foobar, so it
seems.
