Macbook Pro losing characters when typing

My son in law has a newish MacBook Pro, running 10.5.2. He tells me that
it rather seriously loses characters when he's typing (his Mac Pro, also
10.5.2, doesn't have this problem).

I *think* I've read about this somewhere, but I can't remember where. Is
it an issue with MacBook Pros?
