MP3 will not play on windows media player 11

I have selected for mps to play on media player 11. Howver I receive this 
message - "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not

sup****t the file type or might not sup****t the codec that was used to 
compress the file"  These have played on all prior versions of the player.

HELP!!!!!!
