Based on how the original poster worded his question, I deduced he 
downloaded the installer from Microsoft's website.

The installer comes in a file that ends with .dmg. This is a "disk 
image" file. Opening a disk image file is similar to inserting a CD or 
connecting an external hard drive. The Mac will open or "mount" a "disk".

Double-click the newly mounted disk and you'll find the installer file. 
The latest version has problems if it is run while still on the disk.

Dragging the installer from the open window to the Desktop copies it to 
the Macintosh HD. Double-clicking it from the Desktop of the Macintosh 
HD will run it from the Macintosh HD.
