As Bob G suggests, this is definitely a screen redraw issue that may be
attributable to interference from some other program.

Additional considerations:

Have you applied the Office 12.0.1 update?
Which exact version of OS X - 10.5.0, 10.5.2?
Have you tried running Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions?
Are you using Spaces? Office doesn't work with it.
Has Word been launched for an extended period of time? Try re-launching it
and try restarting your Mac if that doesn't work.
Is this a *new* development or has it been that way since installation?

If none of this helps please tell us more about your system configuration
plus any other details - no matter how insignificant they may seem.
