You could be trying to download the wrong updater from Mactopia.
Office 2004 uses a VISE installer so is an entirely different application
than the Office 2008 MAU. It uses a package installer. Both require
different updates.
The Office 2008 MAU should be version 2.1.1 (041011) and is found in the
root application folder.
Office 2008 should be version version 2.1.1.
The Office 2008 MAU is now hidden away.
/Library/Application Sup****t/Microsoft/MAU2.0

Try using "Remove Office" and install again, but run the Apple combo
updater
first.
