2008 (on an Intel Mac Book with Leopard), the image is fuzzy. The image
was created using the Leopard screen capture utility. When I use Preview
to view the .PNG, it looks great. In word, it looks lousy. Any ideas?

Two possible causes:
1) You may not have yet applied Service Release 12.1.0 (which came out
today...). Get it from the home page of www.microsoft.com/mac
2) You may have scaled the image when you inserted it. If you scale an
image to an uneven multiple of the screen resolution, it will get slightly
fuzzy.
