Not all, no.  

If they're using PowerPoint 2007, yes.

If they're using an earlier version (back to 2000) and have the
compatibility 
pack installed, yes.

Otherwise, no.

I was thinking more along the lines of your keeping the file in PPTX
format 
until you're done editing, then a final save as PPT format if needed.

Feel the pain once instead of at ever save.
