My guess:  you're working on a presentation created with an earlier
version of 
PowerPOint.  Your current version is trying to do the right thing and keep
the 
file in its original format, so on save, it has to convert the file from
the 
internal 2008 format back to the original.

As you've noticed.  ;-)

If you don't need to retain compatibility with earlier PPT versions, try
saving 
a copy of your file as a normal PPTX file.  I'm guessing that it'll open
and 
saver a LOT faster henceforth.
