Setting Alerts

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: intel

Hi, i am completely new to excel so please go easy on me :-)

I would like to set a function so that when a date in a cell is reached ie
01/07/2008 i am sent an alert. Rather like an alarm set on a task in
entourage. Is this possible and can anyone help?
