Auto filter on specific columns

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: intel

Does anyone know how to have the autofilter not affecting a specific
column? i have an excel sheet that has autofilters on most of the columns
but i need to manually enter text into a new column added.
