Entourage inbox mail disappears

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: Power PC
Email Client: pop

My inbox mail disappears but when I click on lines suddenly the messages
appear. they may then randomly disappear again in chunks of three or four.
