Unable to receive email alerts on Microsoft Messenger for Mac 7

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: intel

I have been experiencing this problem ever since I first got my Macbook
Pro in August last year (I was using Messenger 6). I have checked my
preferences and the box next to 'Display alerts when e-mail is received'
is ticked.

Any form of help is appreciated!
