Do you still see the Explorer icon in the Dock?? Closing all windows
isn't sufficient, You have to select File > Quit in the menus of
Explorer.
You can also use the Activity Monitor application
(/Applications/Utilitites) to check whether it is still running (and
even to force-quit it from there if need be),
