IE7 Slow Shutdown

When I shut down IE7 it will often take about 5 minutes to close during
which 
time there is major disk activity.  On other occasions it will close 
immediately but will leave an iexplore.exe listed in processes.  Can
anyone 
explain this and suggest a resolution please?
