Hmmm, this doesn't work for me.  I get the error message:

   hdiutil: mount failed - not recognized

I *am* able to mount the device like so:

   % sudo mount_hfs /dev/disk2s3 /mnt

But that still has at least some of the problems that I was
complaining about originally.
