I suspect the problem has more to do with the way this particular drive 
enclosure handles sleep events (whether internally- or 
externally-generated). It seems like it's malfunctioning to me.

I guess I can count myself lucky I don't have this kind of problem with 
the 4-bay Firewire RAID enclosure I use for my file server!:

Thanks to Douglas's posts, I know to steer clear of any Western Digital 
enclosures.  (Actually, that's not hard for me since I steer clear of WD 
hard drives anyway, because they've proven to be more prone to failure 
than other more reliable brands, IME.)
