Okay, here we go.
General Info', only of interest to those Mac
users running Vista on a Boot Camp partition.
********************************************
So what is the file "Bak-2". It is a bootable mirror backup
of the Vista partition on my MacBook Pro.
It was created using a freeware Mac utility named "HexEdit".
The original partition for "Vista Ultimate" OS was
created by Boot Camp.
It is much more difficult to make a bootable backup for
Vista, than it is to make a bootable backup for OS X.
The reason is because Vista is so "sloppy", they scatter
their files over the Vista partition, unlike OS X.
Vista has "immovable" system files, which will not function
if they are moved elsewhere on the disk.
The result is that the entire 62 GB Vista partition has to
be backed up, to be certain that no essential system files
are missed in the backup.
OS X is not plagued by this restriction.
So how are the free space areas on the messy Vista partition
overwritten with hex zeros? With a Windows utility named
"CyberScrub". As with a lot of Windows app's, CyberScrub is
kind of hard to master, and their "activating" scheme is
rather oppressive, so take advantage of the trial period
before deciding whether to buy it, I think it is $43.
MAIN use of CyberScrub is to hide an employees messing
around with websites from his employer, by erasing
incriminating files.
There _are_ freeware "hex zero wiping" utils out there,
but I can't recommend how safe they are, as I have heard
tales about corruption when using them.
There is also a free way to "wipe" which I _do_ recommend,
because I originated it, and it _is_ safe.
(in skilled hands such as yours, gentle reader)
As with all utilities of this nature, it is quite easy
to "zap" the Vista partition, so be very careful.
Will not bother anyone with details unless they ask, because
very few Mac users run the Vista/Boot-Camp combination
at the present time.
