Unchecking stops tracks from playing automatically. To see it in action
uncheck a track, start playing the one before it, then hit next. iTunes
will skip the unchecked one and start playing the next checked one. You
can still select an unchecked track directly and play it though. I've
never used it myself, but I can see it would be useful for tem****arily
disabling a track from a playlist without actually having to remove it.
In addition you can turn off automatic syncing to an iPod for any
unchecked tracks. Select the iPod in the device list, go to the summary
tab and check the option 'Sync only checked songs'.
