I'm not sure if Matlab is a universal binary yet (?), so writing a 
PowerPC .mex for it on an Intel Mac might be tricky. If it's 
PowerPC-only then you'll need to make sure that you're building PowerPC 
code, i.e.

% gcc -arch ppc -o bob bob.c
