I'm not sure what part of my message this sentence is intended to 
respond to.

The general answer to the question here is that Java is, yes, good for 
development. As long as you use it for the kinds of tasks for which it 
was designed and pay attention to what's present (and what's not) in the 
particular version of Java you're using. In short: It's just like any 
other language. Only a problem when people try to treat it as a panacea.
