Free as in beer, or free as in speech ?
It's free as in beer: no charges to use it, or to learn how to use it.
It's not open source since it contains some element which concern DRM.
However, you can obtain the source code for a great deal of the elements
that make up QuickTime though the do***entation is generally so good
you're unlikely to need it.

Apple's developer tools come free with every Macintosh and with every copy
of the operating system. Look for something called 'Xcode tools
installer' or 'Developer tools installer' on the installation DVDs. The
tools include full header files and do***entation.
You can download the same information from the web. The do***entation is
in several places including here
<http://developer.apple.com/referencelibrary/GettingStarted/GS_QuickTime/in
dex.html>
and you can download the header files and various useful preparation and
analysis tools by signing up to Apple's Developer Connection. This
include the 'Apple Online Member****p' product which is entirely free:
<http://developer.apple.com/products/>
This gives you access not only to QuickTime but also to all the other
Apple libraries and frameworks.
