He further says that it is the regex(3) library that he has implemented. 
"Basic" expressions. 

It seems that the basic (referred to as "obsolete") REs are a subset of 
"extended" REs. 

Of all places, I found a list of basic expressions on Wikipedia:

My question is about the metacharacter ".". Using a single ".", shouldn't
it 
match input that consists of a single character, and not match anything
with 
more than one character? 

When I use this metacharacter I'm getting matches for all input,
regardless 
of length.
