The point of an FSRef is *not* to retain compatibility with an older OS
but to
provide functionality that neither aliases nor paths provide.

1) Path: represents a file system item that may or may not exist, no
longer
valid if the item is moved or renamed, persists across processes, can be
used to
identify one item relative to another.
2) FSRef: represents a file system item that must exist, remains valid if
item
is moved or renamed, does not persist across processes.
3) Alias: represents a file system that may or may not exist (but can only
be
created for existing items), remains valid if the item is moved or
renamed,
persists across processes.

They are three different tools, and the right one depends on what you are
trying
to do. The fact that FSRefs came along from Mac OS 9 to Mac OS X does not
mean
that they are a compatibility API, but that the reasons for using FSRefs
exist
just as much in Mac OS X as they do in Mac OS 9.
