# That's a fascinating statement which I wonder if you can back up,
# considering it's officially opaque and what is said is: "An FSRef

If you had watched the evolution from PB interface then FS
through the H to the FSp to FSRef, you would understand that
it is obvious.

# contains whatever information is needed to find the given object; the
# internal structure of an FSRef is likely to vary based on the volume
# format, and may vary based on the particular object being identified."

This is Unix: what identifies an object is the path. What identifies
an inode is an open file descriptor. The alternatives to that are
a Darwin extension to allow an open on device and inode numbers instead
of path; or open the disk in raw mode to read the volume data structures
which are volume format specific.

# Of course, if you want to cache a long-term reference to a file, you'll
# use an Alias.

Which would be a lot more usable if Darwin understood them the
way it does symlink(2).
