I want to start another "contest". What is the motive for
virtualadepts's attempt at plagiarism? Since there is no mention of
measurement criteria or test data, we know this isn't a contest.
Rather, it is a transparent attempt to collect other people's code.
Is s/he a student with a homework problem? Maybe s/he is an employee
who wants to impress a boss with the execution speed of his program.
Could this person be one of those "idea wo/men" who introduce a novel
concept (a "really fast" BM search), and get other people to do the
grunt work? This would be a simple minded amateur who thinks the rest
of the world will be thrilled to participate in the proposed analysis
and optimization of the "advanced algorithm" s/he "brought from
obscurity", a mere 30 years after its introduction.
The entire message just reeks sophomoric attempt at software in an
academic environment. Look at the statement of the challenge: "take
the Boyer-Moore String Search Algorithm, as it is written in C, and make
the fastest running C++ program". Esoteric Words Capitalized for
Emphasis and Used Incorrectly. The oh-so-clever variable names "needle"
and "haystack" in the sample code obviously came from the instructor's
lecture.
Hmmm, this could apply to either a high school student or instructor.
Almost. The typical high school student would probably be learning Java,
not C++, and would be overjoyed to just get something working, without
any optimization. And wouldn't an instructor know the difference
between "beet" and "beat"?
My bet is that this person is a college student residing in some
under-developed country. Anyone who comes up with a better answer will
win my complete Electronic Computer Data Processing System, which they
can pick up outside the Goodwill store in Oakland, California.
