I'd say it's certainly something about the merchants you're looking at. 
Or, since it's fairly rare to find a single vendor that offers an 
otherwise identical drive with and without FW, it's possible you're not 
really looking at comparable units.

If I look at, for example, US prices on Western Digital MyBook units, 
their low-end TB drive is USB only and lists for US$270. For $30 more, 
the next model up offers FW *and* eSATA interfaces alongside the USB, 
but also includes other features (of ambiguous value).

For what it's worth, I'm generally a fan of buying a bare drive and a 
case. Sometimes because it typically saves me money and sometimes 
because I want to make sure I get a specific mechanism on the inside 
which can't be guaranteed on an assembled product.
