Which example in the book are you looking at? A page number would be 
handy so that we can literally be "reading from the same page" :-)

Firstly I'll say that I am a bit kyboshed by the fact that I have the 
3rd edition but am still "stuck" on Xcode 2.5.

However, once I got lost I reached for the Apple examples in the Xcode 
do***entation. The downloadable PDFs referenced in those examples have 
been (unfortunately for me) updated for Xcode 3, so I assume that the 
examples in the do***entation have also been updated.

Here are the examples I have tackled so far (searching on the quoted 
titles in Xcode do***entation should get you the tutorials on your 
system):
