One of the old ways was to open the Debugger Console window and type
po stringVariableName
at the prompt. There might be a better way these days. I use po so often
that having a console window open is pretty much essential when I'm
debugging.

This one is not too bad. Questions seem to generally get a response,
there's just not that many questions (which is nice!). You might like

Apple's mailing lists are generally very well attended. I see there is
one for iPhone Safari development, but apparently not for iPhone dev
in general.
