More details might help to narrow down the issue: which Mac model, which
Mac OS version and which printer model?

You might also get more useful feedback if you post this question to a
relevant newsgroup such as comp.sys.mac.printing, rather than the
advocacy group (which is mostly used for arguing whether Mac or Windows
is better). I've included that group in my posting and set followups
there.

I encountered a similar problem with an HP LaserJet 1022.

For large and relatively complex do***ents, it would only print one or
two pages, but only on my friend's Aluminium PowerBook G4. It worked
fine on my older Titanium PowerBook G4.

We proved that it wasn't a system software or driver issue by booting
his computer using my internal drive. The problem appeared to be
following the hardware of his laptop.

He then stumbled upon the solution: it appeared to be a problem specific
to USB 2.0, or due to the fact that his computer was able to process and
send data faster. If he inserted a USB 1.1 hub between the computer and
printer, everything went fine. My older laptop only had USB 1.1, which
avoided the problem (and my laptop was slower, so it could have been a
CPU speed issue).

We don't know whether this was a problem with the particular HP printer
or this particular laptop, or a general compatibility issue between the
printer and Mac OS X (or Mac USB hardware). Personally I suspect a speed
related buffer overrun bug in the HP, as it required power cycling the
printer to get it working again.
