Thanks, but emphatically NO, NO, NO! At least on my new 17" it is
ESSENTIAL to turn off the "image
smoothing" hidden deep in sys-pref/keyboard/trackpad if you EVER want
to read a font in other than native resolution at zero magnification.
EITHER raising the mag or lowering res reveals the Typhoid Mary of
smoothing algorithms that gives fonts a greasy/milky appearance Can
just flip it with option-apple-\, where you can see fonts, table
lines, as well as pictures get whacked with smoothing under mag. The
bad effect is so global (not just a matter of taste I think), that
maybe the shadowing is going dysfunctional as well.
Yeah, I have tried all the zoom gesture on keyboard or opt-apple-+.
Works much better if you turn off the cursor-centering thing (so
screen stays still unless you touch an edge). A nice thing is a mag
setting is preserved thru a restart, as well as where you are in the
window, so you can set up a giant lasting desktop. BTW, very helpful
to expand micro arrow size in "universal access".
However I went back to low resolution which is a bit simpler for
reasons too tedious to elaborate. Also the machine seems to run
cooler, or should I say it seems near meltdown when I am running all
kinds of fancy conversions on top of hi res. Of interest to me, since
I actually worked on the powerchip designs such as were such famously
power hogs in my earlier 17". But this new Intel contraption can get
so hot I can barely rest my palms and can feel a chimney effect of hot
air coming thru lower left of keyboard (and a VERY noisey fan can come
on).
Geez, I wish apple would save their lower res older models to sell, at
even at a premium. Just after I ordered this refurb, some older ones
came online at greater discounts but I wasn't allowed to switch. I
guess Apple doesn't value literate customers as much as media junkies
(I am phasing over from screen reading to having things spoken to me
with podcasts anyway).
P.S. the explicit appearence "font smoothing" or "text smoothing"
settings had a big effect on my old 17" (helped), but makes NO
apparent difference on my new 17" at any of the light, strong, or
whatever size settings.
