iPhoto, in the most recent incarnation, has decided to make the photo 
library a package. My best guess is that they did this to prevent people 
from messing around with the archival versions of the photos that iPhoto 
keeps around when you make edits, but I really wish the current state of 
your library wasn't buried inside something that an awful lot of users 
will never realize they can dig around in.
