Use command-F or File -> Search to get a search window. Ignore the
Spotlight input box at the top, instead use the popup menus and input
boxes below that.
To search for a filename, set the first popup to "Name", set the middle
popup to whatever you want (e.g. "Begins With"), and type the partial
name in the box to the right.
You can ignore the second row of search controls or use it to narrow the
search, for example "Kind is Images" to search for pictures & graphics.
