in leopard, one must tag every folder to retain the view mode, whereas
in tiger and earlier, it used whatever view the folder was last in.
thus to change views and make it stick in leopard, one must now switch
to the desired view, open view options, click the always open check
box, then close view options.
in tiger, one only needed to switch to the desired view and close the
window.
i consider that getting worse.
