Somehow things now seem to be working as I wanted. If I open Finder,
select 
Show View Options from the View menu, select the properties I wish every 
folder to have, and then select Use as Defaults, it appears that every
folder 
opened will adhere to these properties.

Why this didn't seem to work until now boggles me! Who knows what silly 
mistake I was making.   :-)
