Don't remember it cra****ng, specifically, but I've always found the 
built-in FTP to be flaky in DW, particularly older versions like yours.

I'd recommend using a separate FTP client (of which there are many 
decent Mac ones-- Transmit, Fetch, Cyberduck, Forklift etc.-- or just 
the built-in terminal command if you know how) for transferring your 
files if possible.
