The drive itself is neither usb nor firewire. It will almost certainly
be ide/ata. The usb vs firewire distinction applies to the external
enclosure (ie the box), not to the drive.
In my experience usb-2 enclosures work just as well as firewire for dvd
writing. If the previous poster has evidence to the contrary, I'd be
interesting in hearing more.
As for drives, you can get a Pioneer DVR-111D dual-layer dvd-rw in an
external enclosure for ~US$40. This a nice device imo, and for sure
works perfectly well in a usb-2 enclosure.
