Sounds to me like bad device drivers. Have you tried borrowing a
different DVD+-R/W drive to (try to) see if the problem is in the FW
driver or in the drive's driver? So far, I've tried a Lite-On
SOHW-1213S, a Sony DW-D22A (both DVD+-R/W), and two Samsung SD-608 DVD-
ROM drives in my no-name Oxford 911-chipset (with v. 4.0 firmware)
firewire case. Neither DVD+-R/W drive would respond in any way
(though both worked fine in my Windows boxes), and while the Samsungs
would allow me to read data disks, Apple DVD Player says "No
Authorized Device for DVD playback detected." While I suspect
incorrect chipset firmware settings may be to blame for my re-
writeable drives not working, I expect Apple's device drivers are at
blame for the playback issue with DVD's. I've used the same case to
recover files from one hard-drive and format another, and both actions
went fine.
