scr243 smart card reader

Hello from a MAC noob

I am trying to get a smart card reader (the scr243) to work on my
powerbook G4.  I am running 10.5.3, and the bar at the top shows that
the system "sees" the card.  I have installed the driver for it, but I
see references to the fact that I need the PSCS daemon running.  Yet
this daemon doesn't exist in my /user/bin/ (although pcsctools) does.
I
am also somewhat buffaloed by the fact that I can only see this folder
from a terminal screen via the UNIX cd and ls commands, but not by
opening the computer in finder.  Where am I going wrong?
