Trying to use a Yamaha P-120 KB with a Audiotrak MidiMate USB/MIDI adaptor in Garageband

The MIDI input shows up in apple's Audio MIDI Setup and Garageband. But
I'll be damned if I can work out how to use the KB to produce music in
Garageband. Garageband's help and several google searches have turned up
nothing useful :-(

Why is Apple making this so hard? There's no useful info at all.
