I *had* the same Linksys 8 ****t wired router with a Linksys G access
point. The Linksys G access point was miserable. Connectivity was
spotty and I tried all kinds of external antenna w/o improvement. I got
a Air****t Extreme as a replacement for the Linksys and things like
range and connectivity reliability improved dramatically.
The BEFSR81 8 ****t has since bit the dust and now I've got a 4 ****t
Cable/DSL router from Netgear. Chained off of that is a 8 ****t gigabit
switch from Netgear. The Air****t is plugged into the cable router
10/100 ****t as it is the first gen Extreme that didn't come with
gigabit ****ts.
Anyway, the real limitation is the Cable /DSL modem. The most I ever
see is 20 Mbit download and 1.5Mbit upload so the gigabit and N
wireless are a bit of an overkill. I do have multiple computers that
sup****t gigabit and I transfer files internally between them often.
Thats where the gigabit comes in handy. My wireless devices (15" G4
Powerbook and iPhone) connect at G speeds while the iMac is wired to
gigabit (and the air****t is turned off).
