I don't think the number of images can have anything to do with 
the trouble being experienced.

Even with this well sup****ted and more straightforward code, 
uglinesses can occur if there is a mixture of ****trait and 
landscape, indeed where many different sizes and formats are 
being thumbnailed. Which is why I recommend grouping like with 
like and not throwing all together. Once you have sorted all the 
pics into a reasonable number of categories, say (just for 
simplicity and example) ****traits and Landscapes, then you 
immedietely have a schema to avoid various problems. You can take 
the biggest landscape you have and deem all the landscapes to fit 
into a div that is dimmed to accomodate this biggest. Naturally, 
it will fit all the others too! They can be centred and look 
neat, nothing jamming on anything. Ditto the ****traits. This is 
different to having to resize any of the actual images (and makes 
it unnecessary)

See above, not actually needed, but the box in which they go 
needs to be ordered and dimmed on a rational basis. I know, a bit 
boring to do! But it is an overall scheme, not a per image scheme 
I am talking here. If anyone was interested I can show an example.
