My original query got hijacked by a stupid flame war.
I have a one-page PDF that I know contains a single image, plus maybe
some text.
Suppose I open this PDF file in a pure text editor (BBEdit or the like).
Is there an identifying string I can look for, in a preamble, or
anywhere in the file, that may tell me what format this image is stored
in within the PDF? -- or at least whether its a pixel image or a vector
graphics image?
[I know I can extract the image to a graphics file using Acrobat -- but
since Acrobat offers multiple format options for the extracted image,
presumably it's doing, or at least may be doing, a format conversion in
the extraction process.]
