Popping up ... belatedly, I admit ... well, yeah, I pretty much
buy in stores. The past several years I've been in Singa****e, which may
not be the best place to find Mac strategy games, but there's several
local AppleCentres, and a couple of dedicated spots, and if I don't buy
all that many games that's fine, since I don't have so much time to play
them either.
While I've embraced most of the other sides of the Internet --
throwing out spam e-mails, hanging around quiet Usenet groups, getting
into weird arguments over blogs, staring with disbelief at artwork,
reading summaries of mind-boggling old comic books -- somehow online
shopping has just slipped by me. Pretty much all I do is buy plane
tickets two or three times a year, and use an Amazon gift certificate
a friend sends me each Christmas.
The Victoria 1.04 version, by the way, seems to no longer demand
the DVD be in the drive, of which I certainly approve.
I've overcome my problem with losing to Mexico, by the way, and
had a most satisfying victory over the Confederacy. Where I started to
get into trouble was the Spanish-American War, first by foolishly not
checking whether Spain was currently allied with any other Great Powers
before going for the attack, and second by not having enough trans****ts
to move my mobilized army. (This was a bit of the problem with the real
Spanish-American War, though.)
Ended up conquering the Philippines, Cuba, and got most of
France's holdings in North Africa -- plus the southern coast of Spain!
But then, for reasons best known to Herbert Asquith, the United Kingdom
declared war on me! This despite our having a relation****p on the high
side of +100, and no causes for conflict worth mentioning in a message
box. There must be an event I'm not seeing.
And where the UK leads, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand
followed. Canada's easy to occupy, but when I'm short on trans****ts and
even shorter on actual naval vessels ... with some maneuvering I could
invade New Zealand and Australia, forcing them to quick surrenders too,
and I even made it to Malaya, but with the UK taking my Spanish and North
African holdings ... lessons for next time, certainly. I'd still like to
know what I *did* to get the British angry, though.
