My children and I have been having fun playing Starcraft recently... we
have several computers, and the original game had the ability to spawn
copies for local network multi-player.
Sadly, the Brood War expansion doesn't have that feature, and I can't
easily find copies. Anyway, my question: I'm looking for another game
that can be played multiplayer without forking out big $$$$. Ideally,
on a local network.
To make matters more complicated, I would rather not do one that has a
huge amount of down time between players' turns. I don't mind one that
does turn-based multiplayer, but if four of us are playing, I would
rather not have to wait for the other three players to do their entire
turn. In addition, it should be something that younger kids can enjoy
doing and still have adults enjoy doing with them (age ranges 8-15 for
the children. All of them intelligent, but the younger ones lack
extensive tactical experience.) Finally, it needs to be a game that
doesn't require extensive playing to pick up the skills, because I don't
necessarily have the time any more.
The games can be cooperative or competitive, so long as most of us can
have fun despite the differences in skill levels (we usually do
Starcraft cooperatively, to balance that out. Less reflex-based games
we frequently do competitively.
Do I have a snowball's chance of finding anything that fits the bill?
